Fall Gardening

I am not a fan of the summertime really. The heat kicks my butt (must be something to do with being a redhead with albino skin!) and really makes me miserable. The really great thing about the summer though (and you all know where this is going right?) is the garden. Since our garden this year is a fraction of what it normally is I am for the first time planning a fall garden. I have no clue how to plant a fall garden. There seems to be a lack of zone specific (I am either a 5a or 5b depending on who I ask) help online and its left me stumbling a little. Here is the for sure line up:

Peas
Broccoli
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Greens (I plan to try some that we havent had before)
Carrots

Other than that I am stumped. I need to start those seeds here pretty soon I belive but once again I am not too sure. I will be reading and searching the books this week and quite possibly head over to the extension office and see what info they have. I am excited to try a fall garden though. Each spring it warms up so fast that I dont get very good yeilds from some plants so I am hoping this is a way to stock the freezer better.

Hopefully this week Dean will make it to building the chicken coop. We never bothered with it after the old one blew over in late winter since we were selling the house. Now we will not have fresh eggs for winter but at least we can get some hens that will grow nicely before the cold sets in.

There is so much to do around here, our list is seriously a mile long and of course I add more things to it daily. We are just slowly going through and getting things done that we can.

I was thinking about what you could add to your garden list other than numerous greens and wanted to mention that Kohlrabi can still be planted and expected to mature before winter sets in. I would go with the green over the purple kohlrabi as it is a little more hardy.

I have thouroughly enjoyed reading through your blog especially the frugal and organizational aspect you have implemented.

Thanks Mike. I have enjoyed your blog also. Its been nice to find someone who is actually in Idaho! So many other gardeners/self sufficient bloggers are in the midwest and northeast. LOL not very similar to us.
I have printed your list (Feb 7th post) and will be planning our fall garden. Thank you for your help and suggestions.
