The Happy Spoon

I have a spoon that I love to use.  It's nicely shaped and weighted just right.  I love this spoon.  It is the only one of its kind in our home.  It came from Grandma, in those lovely random boxes of odds and ends.

The Happy Spoon

This spoon is not only my favorite spoon but also a highly coveted prize.  You see this spoon wields enormous power over my kids.  They want it so much they salivate.  They.want.mom's.spoon.

Every single day I take out this magic spoon and begin to sing a little song:

"Who wants my happy spoon, oh who wants my happy spoon?

Who has been great and awesome and kind?

Who has served another, who has been gentle and good?

Oh who wants my happy spoon oh who wants my spoon?"

The kids sit quietly down at the table, fold their arms and wait for me to choose the winner.  They close their eyes and wait for me to set the plate with the spoon in front of the winner.  I then exclaim "The winner of the happy spoon is..... Congratulations on your awesome attitude (or whatever attribute I have seen)".  The kids all congratulate the winner with clapping and high fives.

It really is humor us to watch and take part in.  The kids made this up, I had no part except the song.  I'm not even sure how it started or why.  All I can say is I look forward to this special meal time tradition as much as the kids do.

I love this! I love when you find simple ways to give positive reinforcement to your kids. I love that they cheer for the child who gets the spoon too. What a great tradition. :)

Oh, I love this! We had a few favorite and coveted items like that too when our children were young. What a nice idea to use it as an encouragement!
